ABOUT THE EMPIRE

The Empire is the largest regional performing arts precinct in the country and a hub for creative arts development in the region. Renowned for its classic art deco architecture, the heritage-listed theatre is a premier performance venue, wholly owned by Toowoomba Regional Council.

Since 1999, The Empire has produced mainstage musical productions, establishing a reputation as an industry leader and prestigious option for local performers and backstage crew looking to further their exposure to a professional performance environment.

ABOUT & JULIET

In 2026, The Empire will present & Juliet – A coming-of-age jukebox musical which features the music of Swedish pop songwriter Max Martin and a book by David West Read began in London’s West End, then moved over to Broadway in 2022 where it received 9 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical for the 2022-2023 season.

Created by the Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek” this hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told. & Juliet asks: what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo? Get whisked away on a fabulous journey as she ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love – her way.

SELECTION CRITERIA 

Please address all selection criteria:

1. Inspire, lead, and energise a creative team to deliver a vibrant, pop-driven musical production.

2. Proven success in staging musicals that delight regional audiences and participants alike.

3. Significant experience managing large-cast musicals with dynamic choreography, pop-music scores, and fast-paced staging.

4. Ability to structure rehearsals effectively within a tight timeframe (January–March 2026), accommodating volunteers’ availability.

5. Skilled at maximising creative impact within a defined budget.

6. Effective in working positively with volunteers of diverse skills, fostering a supportive and inclusive production atmosphere.

All applicants must possess a valid Queensland Government – Working with Children Check (Blue Card)

PRODUCTION TIMELINE

Pre-Production: August 2025

Auditions: October 2025

Cast Announced: November 2025

Rehearsals Commence: Saturday, 17 January 2026

Bump-in: Monday, 2 March 2026

Sitzprobe: Thursday, 5 March 2026

Tech Rehearsal: Saturday, 8 March 2026

Season: 13th – 22th March 2026

Rehearsal weeks are expected to contain between 12 to 16 contact hours with the company across all disciplines. These occur on weekends and select evenings.

Six performances are planned. Additional performances may be scheduled to meet demand.
