Banyule City Council is inviting expressions of interest from professional Melbourne-based theatre directors with experience creating and directing multi-disciplinary work for children and site-specific performance.

This is a contracted engagement with Council, where you’ll direct a new work titled How Do We Stop Phil From Growing? an interactive educational performance and workshop focused on recycling, re-use and waste reduction, designed primarily for grade 3 and 4 students.

This will culminate in the premiere of the project in Term 3, 2026 at our Rethink Education Centre in Bellfield, beside an operating materials recovery facility where recyclables are sorted in real time.

As director, you will:

  • Be comfortable working with teaching artists and leading a collaborative creative process.
  • Review and interpret the final script, and guide its delivery on-site at Rethink Education Centre, Bellfield.
  • Support casting and the assembly of performers (live show and filmed segments).
  • Provide creative direction for the filmed pre-recorded video components referenced within the script.
  • Lead rehearsals, and provide creative leadership across staging, props, puppetry and multimedia in collaboration with Council.
  • Refine and update the script as needed during rehearsals, and help deliver and evaluate the inaugural season.
