Initiated by sculptors/designers Folko Kooper and Maureen Craig and commissioned by the Southern Midlands Council, Shadows of the Past is a series of 17 steel sculptures along the Midland Highway that captures the history of the region around the heritage town of Oatlands leading into Hobart from Launceston.

Each sculpture is a vignette in silhouette. With the very good reason that the silhouette was a style of art popular at the time of white settlement of Tasmania, Cooper and Craig found the perfect form for their flat steel sculptures that would be sited in all weathers alongside a highway. They had to be tough and resilient. They are.
