Playwright, screenwriter and novelist Joanna Murray‐Smith was presented with the $30,000 Mona Brand Award for Women Stage and Screen Writers in Sydney on Monday night, for her extensive body of work comprising over 15 internationally performed plays.

The judges were unanimous in selecting Murray‐Smith as the inaugural winner of the Award, made possible by a bequest to the NSW State Library Foundation from the late Australian playwright Mona Brand (who also wrote under the name of Alexis Fox).
