It is no secret that the Newcastle Art Gallery has been struggling financially, but the latest cost-cutting move, which could cut six senior management positions, has the art community up in arms.

In a move designed to ease the burden of its $29 million deficit, in a closed council meeting the Newcastle City Council voted in favour of a drastic staff restructuring, including the scrapping of the artistic director position. In total 82 positions have been affected by the restructure, including a reduction of 21 to 16 middle management positions.
