Lou Reed, one of the most influential musicians of his generation, has died in New York aged 71.
Best known as the leader of Sixties rock band the Velvet Underground, Reed’s solo career began in 1972, and resulted in such hits as ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ and ‘Perfect Day’ from his 1972 album Transformer. Later albums would explore the cities he loved, including Berlin (1973) and New York (1989). He also paid tribute to mentor and band manager Andy Warhol on an album written and recorded with fellow Velvet Underground member John Cale, Songs for Drella (1990).
