31 August marks the 60th anniversary of Melbourne Theatre Company’s first production: Colombe by Jean Anouilh.

MTC’s founder, John Summer, who died in May, directed what was then the Union Theatre Repertory Company, based at the University of Melbourne. The group became MTC in 1968 and has moved from the Union to the Russell Street theatre, the Arts Centre and finally its own venue where one of the theatres is, appropriately, named for Sumner.
