Culture and Closing the Gap found that where Indigenous people had high participation rates in culture they were less likely to suffer from the increased morbidity and social problems seen across much of the Indigenous community.

The research is striking in the light of the recent Federal Budget which allocated $54 million to new police stations in remote Indigenous communities and $18 million to a school truancy officer program, but cut both arts and language programs.
