Young aspiring artists from the wider Hunter region, aged 5 to 18, go on display in the Young Dobell competition; part of the Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival. The competition is named after Sir William Dobell, a renowned artist who lived in Lake Macquarie and was known for his portraits and landscape artworks, as well as his beloved pet dogs which often appeared in his sketches.
The Young Dobell competition showcases artworks that include a portrait of a person or pet that holds a special significance in the young artist’s life, or a landscape artwork of a place that is important to them.
There are three theme categories and four age groups:
Themes:
- Portrait
- Pet
- Landscape
Age groups:
- 5-8 year olds
- 9-12 year olds
- 13-15 year olds
- 16-18 year olds.
The exhibition features over 80 finalists from the Hunter Region.
