Established playwright Hilary Bell will discuss the elements of drama and show you how to apply them to your own project through exercises, games and workshopping. You’ll learn about character development, scene, structure, narrative arch plot and resolution. You’ll finish the weekend with a clear understanding of playwriting and with a new short play that you may want to expand in the future.

You Will Learn:

  • How to overcome the terror of the blank page 
  • How to understand how playwriting differs from other forms of writing 
  • How to find techniques for prompting new ideas 
  • How to collaborate with other writers, actors and directors 

About the Tutor:

Hilary Bell is a multi-award-winning playwright and lyricist. Her work has been produced around the country and internationally by theatres including Atlantic and Steppenwolf (USA) and the National (UK). She was the 2003-04 Tennessee Williams Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of the South, Tennessee, and the 2013 Patrick White Playwriting Fellow at the STC. Hilary is a graduate of the Juilliard Playwrights’ Studio, NIDA and AFTRS, and a founding member of 7-ON Playwrights.
