In this interactive workshop, Emilie Collyer will share her passion for the many ways ekphrastic poetry can be imagined and written. This includes writing in response to visual artworks but also performance pieces, pop culture, television and even other works of literature.
As writers we are always working in response, holding echoes from other artists and carrying on a conversation across time. When we notice and pay close attention to this, the possibilities of our writing expand in exciting and dynamic ways. This workshop will include reading a small number of ekphrastic poems, discussion of various approaches, writing exercises, editing tips and feedback. Join in on the fun!
You Will Learn:
- Various definitions of ekphrasis and how different poets use the approach.
- How to connect different artforms to your own poetry writing process.
- How to play with form, how a poem behaves and how to both use and break rules of form.
- Tips for self-editing poems.
About the Tutor:
Emilie Collyer lives on unceded Wurundjeri land where she writes poetry, prose and performance. Her writing is widely published in Australia and internationally. Her poetry collection Do you have anything less domestic? (Vagabond Press 2022) won the Five Islands Poetry Prize and in 2024 she was runner-up in the Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize and shortlisted in the Newcastle Poetry Prize. Emilie is currently under commission with Red Stitch Theatre (Melbourne) and The Street Theatre (Canberra).
