This writing course, Writers Dreaming: Working with Dreams, Symbols and Motifs with Rosie Dub, takes place at Writing NSW in Sydney.

Dreams can enrich both fiction and non-fiction stories, and our understanding of the psychology of our characters. They can also serve as stepping off points for the creation of fantasy worlds and unique characters.

Dreams are laden with symbols because they emerge from deep within our psyche. Like symbols and metaphors, they are the language of the heart rather than the head, a language that enables us to express what cannot easily be expressed and, in so doing, create layered stories that engage with essential truths.

Through discussion, readings and writing exercises, novelist Rosie Dub will explore how writers use dreams, symbols, metaphors, and motifs in both fiction and non-fiction. We’ll look at how dreams can create foreshadowing, backshadowing, add depth and develop thematic threads. We’ll also dig deep into the symbolic meanings contained in dreams and explore ways of using symbols and motifs to create rich, cohesive stories that resonate with readers.
