Tourmaline: Transcendent is the first Australian solo exhibition of work by acclaimed American artist, filmmaker and writer, Tourmaline. Tourmaline has exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York, Tate, London and more, attracting an enthusiastic following for her work at the intersection of activism, archival research and fine art. Working at this intersection, Tourmaline’s practice often re-centres celebrated historical figures, such as Marsha P. Johnson, who have been integral to the progress of LGBTIQA+ movements. Transcendent continues the artist’s contemporary engagement with history and legacy to make sense of broader issues facing her communities. Across her writing, photography and film Tourmaline often instils messages of joy as a site of resistance, empowerment and self-determination, particularly for Black, trans and gender non-conforming communities.
