Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park is part of the late Maudie Palmer AO’s legacy – international standard environmental art in designed locations on what was once a neglected island in the Yarra River. The gallery was once a scout hall – the renovation designed by architect Greg Burgess has produced an intimate gallery for the summer series of exhibitions.
More information on the summer arts festival and how to reach the island can be found on http://www.herringislandfestival.org.au/
“Sculpture in Place” will present over 40 sculptures in a diversity of media – mostly small to medium scales.
- There will be opening celebrations between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday 10th January.
- On 17th & 18th January there will be “environmental” ceramic workshops between 12 noon and 4pm – for children of all ages over 4.
- Damian Curtain from Friends of Herring Island will run a guided walk around the environmental sculptures on the island on 26th January.
The twenty seven exhibiting artists look forward to seeing you at the exhibition and hope you will enjoy the art, the island and the environment of both art and the restored bushland.
The Parks Victoria free punt service from Como Landing runs 11am to 12:30pm & 1pm to 5pm. The gallery is open 11am to 4:30pm.
You can preview the exhibiton online through the Sculptors Victoria website – images uploaded on the first day of the exhibiton and the exhibition will be available online until 8 February. There will be QR codes on each sculpture label to link to the sculpture details page for the work – you can see the details for each work, vote for the People’s Choice Award or even purchase at your leisure at home after seeing a work that you want to consider further.
