About Read to Me
Read to Me is an artist-run project that puts the illustrated story in front of an audience. They celebrate the art of Australian graphic storytellers by presenting their work to live audiences. From a library to a theatre, to a scout hall to the stage of a dive bar, Read To Me can turn any venue into intimate places where audiences genuinely feel they are being ‘read to’ one-on-one.
Read to Me performance partners include Knox Street Bar, the Comic Arts Workshop, the Perth Comics Arts Festival, the Ubud Writers Festival, The Yogyakarta Biennale, Ashfield Library, City of Sydney, Wollongong Writers Festival, Dulwich Hill P&C, Fairfield City Council, Otherwolds zine fair, Indian media arts festival Eye Myth, FBI radio, University of NSW, and the University of Technology Sydney.
About the co-producers
Gabriel Clark is creative producer and Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at the University of Technology Sydney. He is a visual communication design practitioner whose expertise is in comics, graphic storytelling, motion design, digital photo media, and multi-platform storytelling. His practice-based research extends into producing award-winning and innovative public facing storytelling events and experiences. He conceived and co-produces the cult graphic storytelling event Read to Me, the award-winning multimodal storytelling project Radio With Pictures, and is a co-founder of Graphic festival at the Sydney Opera House.
Fionn McCabe is a cartoonist, printmaker and educator living on Gadigal/Wangal land in Sydney. He teaches in the Animation and Visual Communication schools at the University of Technology Sydney, and runs workshops for organisations like City of Sydney, Sydney Opera House, Perth Comic Arts Festival, and the Sequential Arts Workshop. He is a co-founder and co-producer of Read To Me, a live visual storytelling event that has showcased the work of hundreds of artists. He is currently one of the two co-directors of Comic Art Workshop, a biennial comics residency for artists working on long form projects. Fionn and some friends also run These Friends, a silkscreen project set up in late 2023 to support artists and art organisations that need a bit of love.
Evie Hilliar is a jack-of-all-trades artist based on Gadigal land, whose work finds humour and relatability in the mundane. Currently one of the most followed comic artists in Australia with over 90,000 followers, she is an expert in striking a chord in the masses by combining her own vulnerability and goofiness. Her goal in her art is to put forward different, unconsidered perspectives so that both she and her audience can find common ground and understanding, while we all figure out the trickiness (and often absurdity) of existing in a world that doesn’t often make sense.
