As part of Jessie French’s exhibition Material Conditions: Systems Beneath Surfaces, we have invited Zoe Brittain to present a lecture.
Zoe Brittain is a PhD researcher from Deakin University, Warrnambool, Victoria. Brittain’s studies focussed on ethnophycology; the relationship between people, their communities and seaweed. Brittain’s thesis, “Unsettling Sustainability in Australian Seaweed: From Analysis to Practice” explores how sustainability is understood and given meaning by people with diverse connections to seaweed. Her work further examines the role non-Indigenous researchers can play in supporting saltwater Aboriginal people’s connection to seaweed, and how their connection can offer alternative visions of what sustainability can look like on the Australian coast. Zoe Brittain currently works across Community Development and Social Licence fields and is passionate in the role scientists and experts can play in supporting grassroots community activism.
