Psychology of Sound by Ourania (Rani) Amvrazis, presents immersive, thought provoking and playful works that manifest sound and light into three dimensional forms and bodily encounters.
Amvrazis’ practice draws upon the philosophical traditions of her Greek cultural background and her ongoing interest in science and technology. Her works embed photography, video, light, sculpture, sound, kinetics and performance into large-scale installations that harness the transmission of energy and forces that are often outside the scope of human perception.
The works in Psychology of Sound draw on the properties and potential of sound as an invisible force with presence in all matter. Recorded sounds reference diverse environments and locales, both human and non-human: the screams of children at play, the roar of a plane overhead, the clank of machinery. Here, Amvrazis translates the ephemeral energy of such sounds into an expansive range of three-dimensional forms.
Psychology of Sound grapples with the complex emotional impacts of major world events: the global pandemic, the impact of war and their ramifications for social, political and environmental landscapes. The interactive work Monotoni (2020) reflects the isolation and psychological experience of COVID-19, inviting the viewer to intervene and overlay their movements; bending light in their own performative act. The potential of destructive forces to terraform and sculpt new societies is explored Sounds of war (2022). Speculative futures (2023) deploys sonics as the key variable in a simulation that predicts a future sculpted by sound.
Each work in Psychology of Sound becomes an algorithmic meditation on what our future response to political, social and economic forces may be.
