This writing course, Playing with Poetry with Paris Rosemont, will be held at Writing NSW, in Sydney.

Unlock your potential as a poet by joining this course with award-winning poet, Paris Rosemont, to help revitalise your creative process and get your creative juices flowing. Re-discover the joy of writing poetry. As adults, we don’t play enough. In this course, you will have full permission to play, play, play! We will be playing with poetic form, voice, style, and technique, and drawing upon different sources of inspiration and a wealth of material.

Paris will guide you through a series of hands-on writing exercises via fun prompts, case studies – both contemporary and traditional – and experimentation with different poetic tools and techniques. Curious about the difference between a haibun and a 9x9x9? A sonnet and a villanelle? You decide whether you’d like to colour neatly within the lines, or to veer wildly outside conventions. Let’s learn the rules, then have fun playing with them! Each participant will leave with an ‘inspiration jar’ of further writing prompts and ideas so they may continue their poetic journey beyond this course.

Expected learning outcomes

Participants will:

  1. Explore a variety of poetic forms and learn their foundations
  2. Play with devices such as imagery, rhythm, tone, and technique, to experiment with voice and different poetic styles
  3. Generate new poems (or the seedlings of poems that may be further developed)
  4. Study exemplars from a variety of poets, both traditional and contemporary, to broaden knowledge and understanding of topics covered
  5. Discover new inspiration for their poetry and refresh their creative practice.

Participant requirements

Bring your own pen and paper or fully charged device, plus an empty container roughly the size of a large jam jar.
