A Period Room is traditionally a display that represents the design and decorative art of an historic interior, usually within a museum. Selecting elements of rooms for display in museums has often left out as much as it has left in. This talk looks at the history of the Period Room and explores more recent developments in presentation in an art museum context.

SUZANNE BRAVERY curated and managed house museums at the Historic Houses Trust of NSW (now Museums of History NSW), including Elizabeth Bay House, Vaucluse House, Elizabeth Farm, Rouse Hill estate and Meroogal. She managed the Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne, and was a Head Curator at the National Museum of Australia. Suzanne’s research interests include historic interiors, social history and conservation housekeeping. This talk uses material from this research.
