On a city calendar increasingly crowded with entertainment options, one event has quietly become a weekly institution. Every Tuesday, at Lynott’s Lounge inside Johnny Fox’s Irish Pub, Experimental Comedy Club transforms Northbridge into the epicentre of Western Australia’s comedy scene.

Tonight’s show continues that tradition, with Gareth McKean hosting a showcase featuring Alex Fleay, Mick Gledhill, Trea Young, David Hughes and more. It’s another evening dedicated to what the club has become famous for: comedians taking creative risks, developing new material and giving audiences a front-row seat to the evolution of live stand-up.

Since opening in 2021, Experimental Comedy Club has become far more than a weekly comedy night. It has grown into the foundation of Grassroots Comedy, now recognised as Western Australia’s largest independent comedy network, producing shows across Perth and regional WA while providing a genuine pathway for performers at every stage of their careers.

Founded by veteran Perth comedian Xavier Susai, Grassroots Comedy was established with a clear objective: remove barriers between audiences and comedians, and build an environment where performers could continually improve through regular stage time rather than waiting for opportunities to appear.

“Comedy only gets better when comedians are performing regularly in front of real audiences,” says Susai. “Experimental Comedy Club exists to give emerging comics somewhere to grow while giving experienced comics a place to keep writing, experimenting and sharpening their craft. The audience isn’t just watching comedy here, they’re part of the creative process.”

That philosophy has become one of the defining characteristics of the room. Rather than relying solely on polished touring acts, Experimental Comedy Club embraces the creative process itself. Every Tuesday, audiences witness jokes being written, refined and occasionally retired forever. Some ideas become festival centrepieces. Others disappear after a single performance. That unpredictability has become part of the club’s appeal.

The club has also become one of Perth’s most respected development rooms. Hundreds of comedians have stepped onto the Experimental Comedy Club stage before progressing into professional showcases, Fringe World productions, interstate tours and television appearances. Along the way, internationally recognised performers including Mark Normand, Stephen K Amos, Arj Barker, Fiona O’Loughlin, Jason Leong, and many others have dropped in to test material alongside local performers.

For comedians, it’s professional development.

For audiences, it’s one of the most entertaining nights available anywhere in Perth.

The venue itself contributes to the experience. Johnny Fox’s Irish Pub offers one of Northbridge’s most welcoming atmospheres, and Tuesday visitors can enjoy the popular $24 chicken parmi and chips special before heading upstairs for the show. Combined with tickets from just $10 online ($15 at the door), Experimental Comedy Club remains one of Perth’s best value nights out.

For anyone searching for live comedy in Perth, things to do in Northbridge, Tuesday night entertainment, stand-up comedy Perth, or simply a reason to escape the routine of the work week, Experimental Comedy Club continues to set the benchmark.

It is a comedy room built by comedians, supported by audiences, and driven by one simple belief: the best comedy scene is one that keeps growing.
