This writing course, Writing for Middle Grade and YA with Will Kostakis, will be held online.
Writing for kids and teenagers has always been a challenge – they’re ruthless and quick to abandon a book at first sight of a paragraph that’s too flowery – but it feels especially so now.
This online workshop with Will Kostakis will guide you through the crafting process, from generating an idea that captivates a young reader to building scenes that feel authentic, with a series of practical exercises designed to elevate your writing.
This workshop will also feature actionable advice that will help your work appeal to publishers and readers alike, and help you survive the ups and downs of a rapidly evolving industry.
Expected learning outcomes
In this workshop, participants will:
- Crafting engaging writing for Middle Grade and Young Adult readers
- ‘Selling’ your idea to publishers, and then an audience
- Building a sustainable career

- Participants will work through several lessons, which will open sequentially over the first few days of the course.
- You can complete the lesson material in your own time.
- This course includes short writing assignments and the opportunity to give and receive peer feedback. Some assignments will receive tutor feedback if completed by the deadlines provided.
Please expect to spend ten – twelve hours on the course, noting that the amount of time needed to read, respond to discussions, write, revise and critique will vary from person to person. We recommend allocating an hour a day to the course while it is running. By setting aside this time, you will get the most out of the course, and be able to engage with other participants and the tutor.
