Travel memoir is more than recording where you went – it’s a creative project that transforms personal experience into compelling narrative.
In Small Moments, Big Journeys: Crafting the Travel Memoir, Jillian Schedneck will take writers through shaping lived moments into story, drawing on examples from classic and contemporary travel memoirs.
Participants will learn how to identify the deeper question or ‘quest’ behind a journey, craft vivid openings, and build scenes that reveal insight rather than summary. The workshop will also explore practical pathways to publication, including how to submit short travel pieces to literary magazines.
Expected learning outcomes
In this workshop, across three scaffolded assignments, participants will:
- Draft an evocative opening to a travel memoir.
- Develop scenes that clarify the memoir’s underlying quest.
- Write a complete short travel memoir ready for revision and submission.
Writers will leave with new skills, clear direction, and the beginnings of a polished travel memoir piece.
