This workshop, Online: Pitching to Publishers: How to Place Your Work with Dr Erin O’Dwyer, will be held online via Zoom.
In today’s risk-averse and fragmented publishing landscape, ‘pitching’ no longer means sending a manuscript to a single gatekeeper. Writers and thought leaders must understand a diverse ecosystem – from traditional book publishers and independent presses to mainstream media, literary magazines, niche outlets, digital platforms and self-publishing pathways.
In this three-hour workshop, Dr Erin O’Dwyer will demystify the pitching process across formats. Participants will learn how to assess where their work belongs, shape compelling proposals, and approach literary agents and publishers with confidence and market insight. There will also be time for sharing anecdotes and a Q&A.
Whether you are seeking a traditional book deal, placing opinion pieces, submitting to literary journals, pitching features to media, or navigating your own self-publishing pathway, this session equips you with the tools to move from idea to publication.
Expected learning outcomes
In this workshop, participants will:
1. Map the publishing landscape – distinguish between traditional book publishers, independent and niche presses, mainstream and specialist media, literary journals, writing competitions, digital platforms and self-publishing models.
2. Craft a targeted pitch – tailor proposals, synopses, query letters and media pitches to suit different publishing formats and editorial expectations.
3. Position your work strategically – identify the right outlet, understand markets and timing, and present yourself as a credible industry professional.
