How do we live mindfully and with joy and grace? How do we make the world better? How do we live creatively and curiously with ourselves and our world? What do we actually do to improve our mental health? I find the world outside my door is full of light and joy. I have been creating quirky birds, a new native species, in response to the challenges that arise in our lives. They are made from recycled and found objects, things that other people would send to landfill. As the quirky birds develop in the studio, they tell me about themselves – sometimes too much information! Some are definitely city birds, while others prefer a more natural environment, such as a bush forest.

A small group of these have created their own parliament of owls.

They peer out from amongst the decals of foliage, catching your eye and evoking a giggle.

About the Artist

In a world that often feels burdened by challenges, I strive to create joy through my art by celebrating the whimsical aspects of life. My work primarily focuses on the concept of Quirky Birds, offering a joyful exploration of character and personality expressed through recycled and found objects. The challenge of combining disparate materials that might end up in landfill, inspires me to rethink what art can be and emphasises the importance of sustainability. Creating these strange and delightful birds becomes an introspective journey, allowing me to laugh at and with myself, inviting viewers to engage with their own wonder.
