Magnificence occurs at all scales across a city, from road markings to modernist statements, and through the expressions of its denizens. In a new series of paintings, Mark Bo Chu observes familiar and unfamiliar scenes across Melbourne, focusing on singular and collective subjects. Chu depicts freeways and festivals as shared public experiences, as well as work and friendship, cherished in private. In his gritty and vibrant style, he presses at what makes a moment monumental.
