John Dent ventures in the landscape turning to the spontaneity and freedom of gouache medium, capturing an atmospheric sense of place where the sensation of colour and shape are the priority. Dent’s subtle layering allows colour to pulsate against each other. Individual works present an identifying hue; coastal aquamarine; pastoral emerald; gentle lilac or dry golden hills; yet upon closer examination the true array of colours used is revealed and can be fully appreciated. Dent’s gouaches are saturated – in colour, in experience and in place.
Dent has been exhibiting for over 50 years, including paintings and technically demanding prints, following his time spent at the famous Lacouriere-Freleur Print Workshop in Paris. A retrospective of his work was held at Castlemaine Art Gallery in 1994. Drawing inspiration from everyday objects as well as the landscape, Dent’s work is represented in major institutions including the National Gallery of Australia; the National Gallery of Victoria; the Art Gallery of New South Wales; Parliament House; Arts Victoria and numerous regional and university collections. His landscapes have been celebrated in the Wynne Prize on three occasions, and Dent has also been a finalist in the Archibald Prize.
