An introduction to Hazara grid embroidery techniques.
Join exhibiting artist Tamana for an introduction to Jalli Doozi, a form of Hazara embroidery constructed through the geometry of an open grid. Working with thread and square mesh, participants will learn how repeated stitches gradually form intricate geometric and decorative patterns.
Tamana will introduce the basic technique and guide participants in creating their own small embroidered piece. This workshop will focus on the relationship between pattern, repetition and handwork, and how a simple grid can become the foundation for a highly detailed textile design.
All materials provided. This workshop is suitable for all levels. Beginners welcome.

About the Facilitator
Tamana was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and graduated from Sorya High School in 2013. In 2020, she received a BFA scholarship from Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan. Following the fall of the Afghan government to the Taliban in 2021, Tamana was forced to leave her homeland. Her scholarship, supported by the South Asia Foundation, enabled her to continue her education abroad. Tamana eventually moved to Australia, where she is now pursuing her studies at RMIT University.
Tamana’s artistic practice centers on beads, textiles, and drawing, inspired by her childhood experiences with crafts. In her community, beads and embroidery hold dual significance: as a source of modest financial support for women and as tools for adding beauty to everyday life. Through her work, Tamana explores the expressive potential of these materials, using them to convey her ideas and perspectives as a woman, giving a distinct voice to her visual narratives.
