Heritage Hands is a photographic exhibition by Brisbane-based photographer, visual storyteller and creative director Melissa Hoedel, celebrating traditional artisans and the specialist skills they practise.
Presented at Et al Gallery and Studio, Sandgate, the exhibition features intimate portraits and stories of artisans working in traditional and lesser-seen practices, photographed within their working environments. Alongside the photographic works, visitors will also see examples of each artisan’s work on display, offering insight into the tools, materials and processes behind handmade objects.
The exhibition includes artisans working across practices such as umbrella making, natural dyeing, bookbinding, antique restoration, whip making and wig making, among others. Together, these makers represent skills that are increasingly rare, yet culturally significant.
Heritage Hands forms the foundation of a broader, ongoing project, including a forthcoming book documenting the featured artisans and their practices.
The exhibition runs from 5–22 February, with an opening night on Saturday 7 February. Entry is free and open to the public.
