The Greek Film Festival returns to Melbourne for its 31st year, bringing more than 50 films and 120 sessions to seven cinemas from 13–25 October 2026.
Spanning contemporary features, documentaries, acclaimed festival titles, restored classics and Australian premieres, the 2026 program showcases the breadth of filmmaking emerging from Greece and the wider Greek diaspora.
Among this year’s highlights is Broken Vein, Greece’s official submission for the 2027 Academy Awards, alongside Hen and Hold Onto Me, fresh from the Melbourne International Film Festival.
The program also revisits an important chapter of Greek cinema with Eva (1953), directed by pioneering filmmaker Maria Plyta, the first woman to direct a feature film in Greece. Newly restored, the film was presented at Cannes Classics.
The Festival opens on Tuesday 13 October with the Australian premiere of Best Friends Forever (Φίλοι Για Πάντα), written and directed by Konstantinos Mousoulis.
In Melbourne, the Festival expands to seven cinemas in 2026: The Astor Theatre, Palace Como, Palace Balwyn, Palace Pentridge, Palace Westgarth, Palace Kino and Penny Lane.
