“Going Where You Take Me”, explores my inner world as I’ve navigated the last 4 years of my life as a curious Australian-Asian woman in her early to mid 20s. A pivotal age of finding a place in my identity, growing in my power as a woman, navigating my morals, beliefs, relationships and solidifying my belonging in the world. My ideas arrive intuitively, pulled from unique and transformative experiences that shifted how I see myself and the world around me. The ideas are executed through the art of surrealism, where imagery becomes whimsical, thought provoking, and delightfully out of the ordinary.  I move between seriousness and playfulness in both life and art, and I have always been drawn to childlike cartoons and dreamlike animation. That influence naturally spills into the work.

For this exhibition, my focus was on self discovery, so I naturally gravitated toward self portraits, often nude. I like the idea of painting myself naked in both an exposing and vulnerable way, as I discuss personal topics, and also in a self appreciative, therapeutic way, where I’ve found that doing nude self portraits gave me a new appreciation and love for myself and my appearance. I am heavily influenced by music, where it’s extremely common for musicians to make songs about themselves and their feelings and experiences, and so I’ve taken those concepts and applied them to my art practice and now use art as a medium to talk about myself.
