John Derrick’s latest body of work consists of paintings that explore the oscillation between figurative and abstract modes of representation. These paintings are derived from figure drawings done from life. He has used bright, colourful brushstrokes to push the human form into a more abstract depiction of space. Each painting is like an improvised piece of music, starting with the basic structure of the figure and then feeling out the human form intuitively using colour, gesture, texture, and light and shade. It’s as if he has put the human form through a guitar distortion pedal and amplifier, reconfiguring the human form, yet traces or echoes of the figure remain. The paintings in this series create a world of creatures with human-like characteristics—shifting and mutating, flickering in and out of existence, and finally heralding a new futuristic realm.

John Derrick is based in Melbourne, Australia. He has had over twenty years of solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. He got his start in art doing graffiti in his childhood suburb in Melbourne, Australia but then went on to study Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University, Australia. He was awarded a prestigious Samstag Scholarship and spent two years studying a Master of Fine Art at Pratt Institute in New York. He completed his PHD at RMIT University in Australia where he combined analogue and virtual painting media in a semi – immersive installation. He has been a finalist in various art prizes including the Alice Prize, the Percival Portrait Prize, Doug Moran Portrait Prize, and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing.
