Empathetic Editing in the Digital Age
“Who” are we as editors? How does the answer to that question inform the approach we take to the art and craft of editing? In this seminar, we will consider a philosophical framework for how to successfully work with writers that takes empathy as its clue. We will consider how the relationship we do, or do not, forge with the writer can influence the outcome of the work and discuss practical strategies for building on that relationship through the editing process.
More broadly, we will consider the cultural context of this conversation as a new era of digital editing tools, including those marketed as artificial intelligence, become universally adopted. What are the risks or the benefits of such tools? What can get lost when our edit is guided by artificial intelligence instead of by the empathetic intelligence we’ve tended with the writer, and how does an ethos of empathetic editing bring those possibilities to light?
