“We are to have company on Friday!….we are to be nine at table! I am most desirous of providing not just a bill of fare suitable to such distinguished company, but one that will cause no embarrassment to our larder – or more particularly, to she who is its keeper”.

It is every woman’s dilemma. Guests for dinner – what to serve? For women in Jane Austen’s time it was no different. Searching for recipes and new ideas, gathering ingredients, arranging the table, preparing the food, then serving it… all with many more rules of conduct than we are governed by today.

Using cookbooks of the period and of course Jane’s letters, here’s the opportunity to explore the world of Regency food. Actress Lise Rodgers will deliver this special presentation in costume appropriate to the time of Jane Austen.

Lise Rodgers is an accomplished Melbourne actress whose career has spanned stage, screen and radio. An interest in the world and characters of Jane Austen is the inspiration behind her series of Jane performances

Your ticket includes tea or Market Lane coffee served before the presentation, and time to browse our exclusive range of books, gifts, and homewares at TJC Emporium.

This event is presented on-site at The Johnston Collection. Please see your ticket for details. NOTE: Tickets for this event do not include access to our exhibition-house, Fairhall. Guided tours of the current exhibition can be booked separately.

This event is supported by The Colin Holden Charitable Trust.
