Join award-winning contemporary fiction writer Anne Freeman for an immersive exploration of the short story’s potential for brilliance. In this session, you’ll discover how seemingly simple narratives can evoke intense emotional resonance.

You’ll leave with practical skills and techniques, renewed inspiration and a deeper understanding of the short story’s capabilities for creative experimentation and growth.

Bring pen and paper or a fully charged device to participate in the writing exercises.

You will learn:

•    To demonstrate brevity by crafting writing in which every word serves a purpose
•    To construct impactful narratives through concise plotting and rich characterisation
•    To apply a balanced approach to showing and telling, using each technique purposefully to enhance narrative effect
•    To develop distinct character voices through dialogue that reflects individual personality and perspective
•    To edit to remove unnecessary content, thereby  improving clarity and tone
•    To experiment with form and content by using short stories as a space for creative risk-taking and innovation
