About the Show:
Everyone is warned. No one is saved.
One of the greatest classic Greek tragedies ever written, Antigone is a story where defiance sparks devastation and mercy arrives too late. In a city poisoned by power and pride, a single act of love is met with unforgiving law. No one yields. No one escapes.
Our story follows a woman who dares to honour the dead in a world ruled by rigid law and ruthless pride. In the aftermath of civil war, two brothers lie dead – one honoured as a hero, the other condemned as a traitor. Kreon, the new king of Thebes, decrees that the traitor’s body must remain unburied. Antigone refuses to abide. She performs the burial rites demanded by family, faith and love, fully aware it will cost her life.
Her choice sets off a chain of irreversible events. Her sister pleads with her to reason. Her fiancé – Kreon’s son – begs his father to listen. A prophet warns that the gods are turning away. Each voice is ignored. Law eclipses mercy. What began as a single act of compassion spirals into destruction, claiming not only Antigone, but everyone bound to the king’s refusal to bend.
Fast forward the clock. Our modern adaptation of Antigone, adapted by Eamon Flack, directed by Kylie Bonaccorso, and performed by Excelsia’s 2nd and 3rd year Dramatic Art students gives life to this mellennia-old tale. Set in a high-end boardroom, the characters in this story come to life in a way that poses the question for us today – does law still eclipse mercy?
