Certificate IV in Design

The Certificate IV in Design qualification provides a pathway to a career in design via further training and study or employment. Students work to achieve competency in design related skills and knowledge. They develop their personal abilities and skills to produce a folio of work suitable to gain entry to further study or employment in design.

ACTIVITIES/TASKS

Delivery is via weekly practical, theory, and workshop sessions. Units of competencies (UOCs) are clustered into NCAT Folio Preparation subjects delivered over the full year. Activities include Job Briefs of set workplace tasks or projects, participation in-group discussions, and a final presentation on the implementation and outcomes of specified projects. Students must participate in practical workshops, tests, demonstrations, presentations, excursions, gallery visits, create of an online portfolio, oral presentations, self-evaluation exercises, questionnaires & surveys.

LENGTH OF COURSE

This is a one-year program for 35 weeks. Classes are on four days a week. Three days from 9:00 – 3:15 and a fourth day 9:00 – 5:00. Students are encouraged to attend a fifth Open Studio day to work on their practical work with access to materials, equipment and a trainer. This allows time for the development of the underpinning skills and the preparation of a portfolio of practical work.

PATHWAYS

Senior students and mature age students seeking a career change use the Certificate IV in Design as a pathway to a career in Design. The Certificate IV in Design provides a pathway to further study at a TAFE and/or Higher Education Design programs at university level across a broad range of design disciplines. It can also lead directly to employment opportunities such as a junior design assistant.

It is highly recommended that people undertaking this qualification possess some relevant art or design skills and knowledge prior to entry. This could be demonstrated through skills in drawing or particular art and/or techniques
