Out of the Boxes and into the Desert
Talk & Tour with Art historian John Kean
Join us at LWAG this Saturday 13 July, 11:30am - 12:30pm, as art historian John Kean leads a walkthrough of the Berndt Museum of Anthropology's latest exhibition Out of the Boxes and into the Desert, which opens this Friday 12 July 6 - 8pm.
During this talk, Kean will reflect on his time working directly with artists as art advisor at Papunya Tula Arts. Referencing the paintings from the Museum’s collection on display, Kean will also discuss some of the stylistic and cultural differences evident in the work of Pintupi, Anmatyerr and Warlpiri artists. Kean's relationships and connections with the artists, Ronald Berndt and Mary Macha position him as a significant individual within the history of this art movement and its continuing legacy.
John Kean has worked as Art Advisor at Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd, (1977-9), inaugural Exhibition Coordinator at Tandanya: the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute (1989-92), Exhibition Coordinator at Fremantle Arts Centre (1993-6), and Producer with Museum Victoria (1996-2010). He is currently undertaking a PhD in Art History at the University of Melbourne. Kean has published extensively on Indigenous art and the representation of nature in Australian museums.FREE - Register to attend
