How does Public Art Happen?

How do artists find out, apply, manage and land public art commissions?

For artists, and those who project manage public artworks the process of trying to navigate through the complex procedures with councils, funding bodies or private companies can be frustrating.

Understanding the key stages to bring an idea to reality including how to develop a proposal and deal with the procedures at local government and private organisations can make a world of difference to your project.

This workshop will take you inside Monash Art Projects (MAP) to gain a better understanding of the key stages involved in designing, proposing and producing Public Artworks.

Led by renowned Australian contemporary artist and Director of Monash Art Projects (MAP), Professor Callum Morton, you’ll go inside the MAP collaborative studio to break down the key stages involved in proposing and producing a Public Artwork.

Inside the MAP studio, you’ll explore current and past Public Artwork projects from prominent contemporary Australian artists such as Daniel von Sturmer, Emily Floyd, Kathy Temin, Brook Garru Andrew and your host, Callum Morton.

You’ll examine the processes behind these public artworks using current examples such as the Washington Monument at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC, USA and Emily Floyd's recent work, Open Space in Sydney’s CBD.

This workshop will help you gain a better understanding and overview of the key stages involved in proposing and producing public art, from the commissioning process to tendering a submission.

This course is suited to:

  • current artists, designer and architects
  • people working in local and state government or publicly funded organisations
  • people working in property development
  • And those aligned or interested in working in the field of public art.

The workshop will conclude with morning tea.
