Hobsons Bay is located in the inner west of Melbourne. Our diverse neighbourhoods include Newport, South Kingsville and Spotswood, the seaport of Williamstown with its lovely historic streetscapes, coastal Altona with its early pastoral history and to the west community driven Laverton, Altona Meadows and more.
Hobsons Bay City Council recognises that a vibrant and healthy community is one that values, has access to and celebrates the arts. The Council has helped created a significant public art collection, with works by some of Australia’s leading artists in the public realm. We present an annual performing arts program called Arts At Your Doorstep, produce and support a full events and cultural calendar including the award winning Art In Public Places, sponsor the Williamstown Literary Festival, the Newport Folk Festival and lots more.
The Council provides funding support to The Substation which as a not for profit independent operates one of Australia’s newest contemporary multi arts spaces from Newport. The Council has recently developed Woods Street Arts Space, the former post office in Laverton, as a catalyst for urban renewal, and as a new and accessible resource for artists and other practitioners here in the west.
