Arts and Cultural Development contributes to the well being of the Stonnington Community. It draws from the make-up of the Community and in-turn helps define the ongoing development of the Stonnington Community’s identity. Arts and Cultural Development enhances and enriches the Community identity and provides the members of our Community with a sense of place and pride within it. Council plays a crucial role in creating an environment that encourages arts and cultural activities to flourish. These activities reflect the identity of our Community they will also challenge and assist in continually re-defining that identity. The encouragement and development of artistic endeavours is one of the key components that create the Cultural Identity of Stonnington.

Many other fields help create that identity including the preservation (and celebration) of built heritage whilst also encouraging innovative design in new construction, whether it be streetscapes, parks and gardens or buildings. Having hosted artists such as Coldplay and Shirley Bassey (music), Bud Tingwell (drama), Tripod (comedy) and The Bald Archys (visual art), Chapel maintains a dynamic performance schedule, cementing our role as a vanguard for artistic and cultural excellence. Great performance spaces and galleries, in and over the foyer, make Chapel Off Chapel the first choice for those seeking out the best of Melbourne arts.

Stonnington Jazz is now in it’s 9th year of presenting 100% Australian jazz, and is firmly established as an important event on the national jazz calendar. The 11 day festival has established a strong track record of presenting memorable performances from a variety of Australian artists based in Melbourne, interstate and internationally, both established names and those in the early stages of their careers, and across a pleasingly wide range of jazz styles.
