ABOUT FRINGE BRISBANE 2022:

Fringe Brisbane invites artists & creators to be a part of a city-wide festival that puts their work on the global stage. Brisbane IS Fringe.

The inaugural Fringe Brisbane invites artists and venues to partner in a reimagined fringe festival taking over Brisbane from the 14th of  October until the 6th of November 2022.

“It’s time Brisbane takes its place on the global stage,” said Zed Hopkins, Festival Director of Fringe Brisbane. “Fringe is about our creative Independence. It’s about our community, And it’s about coming together to innovate and build something extraordinary.”

What that means is that the inaugural Fringe Brisbane Festival will combine the things audiences love about the fringe model popularised across the globe, while tackling the issues that leave artists shortchanged by most major fringe festivals.

“Brisbane IS Fringe. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel but we have rebuilt from the ground up to reflect and empower our local community. Fringe Brisbane is focussed on building a platform that puts local artists, venues & partners on the world stage. More than that it’s about making a fringe that’s easy, accessible & driven by community needs,” said Zed Hopkins.

Event registrations open 5pm on the 17th June through EVENTOTRON, with creators, performers and everyone in between invited to submit events of any genre, style or medium.

Fringe Brisbane has been years in the making, and is the result of hundreds of conversations with local arts leaders, creatives, venues & audiences.

It is built on the back of over a decade of experience running Anywhere Festival, which has been not just Brisbane, but South East Queensland’s go-to festival of independent performances since 2011.

Fringe Brisbane is also committed to building inter-industry and cross-platform partnerships to situate itself as a core part of a broader arts & culture industry.

“We’ve already working with Sydney Fringe and Melbourne Fringe to create a truly independent artist centric touring circuit from September all the way through to November up and down the eastern seaboard.”

Fringe Brisbane is also about innovation. Just some of the innovations being brought to Fringe Brisbane include:

  • Full audiences are the goal with a capped number of events

  • A reimagined fringe that allows artists and venues to see what other events have been confirmed before the program is revealed.

  • A focus on hubs that create a focus for audience and enable events to share resources and reduce venue costs with the Fringe Brisbane Hub in South Brisbane, EC Venues and Big Fork in Fortitude Valley, Arcana in Moorooka, Hayward Street Theatre in Stafford and a Yerongpilly hub with Studio1, Plant Empire and Slipstream brewing.

  • Artists can be part of the online program with no upfront fee and have the control to decide how much they want to feature in the print and online program.

  • A day by day program instead of the bewildering alphabetic list of acts popular at many fringes.

  • Venues can search and book events they want instead of it being left to artists to do all the searching.

  • Create an east coast tour with Sydney Fringe and Melbourne Fringe.

  • A central multi space hub in South Brisbane thanks to Aria Properties for performances, rehearsals and for the artistic community to meet, work and play.

It is all about artists and venues being partners instead of just “participants”.
