One of Australia’s most lucrative prizes for emerging writers is now open for submissions. The 2024 Newcastle Writers Festival Fresh Ink Emerging Writers Prize supports regional NSW writers by awarding the winner $5000 for professional development as well as a week-long residency at Varuna, The Writers’ House, in Katoomba. This year’s judges are Newcastle writer David Owen Kelly and Central Coast writer Anna Downes.

Writers living outside the Sydney metropolitan area can apply and are required to provide a writing sample of up to 3000 words. An ‘emerging’ writer is defined by the festival as someone who has not previously published, or has a contract for, a full-length work with a commercial or academic publisher. Writers need to be aged 18 or older to enter and there is no upper age limit.

A shortlist of up to five writers will be announced on 12 September and the winner will be announced at a special event in Newcastle on on 28 September. There is a $12 entry fee. Terms and conditions are available here  https://www.newcastlewritersfestival.org.au/2024-fresh-ink-prize/
