Applications for Volunteers Guides are open now until 11.59pm on Tuesday 29 October 2024. The National Library relies on its Volunteer Guides to run the daily 11am tours and also a ‘meet and greet’ service to answer questions from visitors in our foyer.

Benefits of becoming a Volunteer Guide

  • Flexible schedule – volunteer at times that suit you
  • Monthly morning tea and guest speaker presentations
  • Free Friends of the National Library membership (which allows you discounts to the Bookshop and Bookplate cafe)
  • Free parking when you are volunteering
  • Increase your knowledge of a cultural institution through training and experience
  • Join a community – a team of knowledgeable and passionate volunteers
  • Meet visitors and tour attendees from all over Australia and the world
  • Enhance your public speaking skills
  • Share your passion for literature, history, culture
  • Make a difference by helping others discover the treasures of the National Library through fascinating stories and insights
  • Get key insights into the Library’s exhibitions, art, architecture and more
  • Expand your knowledge about the Library’s collections and learn stories behind its unique treasures
  • Support one of Australia’s leading cultural institutions.

The time commitment is around one shift per fortnight – 30 minutes if running a tour or 4 hours for a ‘meet and greet’ shift in the foyer. Volunteers can nominate their own shifts to fit in with their schedule and lifestyle. Volunteers receive 1-2 days of training, followed by shadowing a few daily tours until they feel comfortable to take their own. Ready to join? Visit our Become a volunteer page!
