Bayside Gallery is delighted to launch the 2024 Bayside Painting Prize—an initiative expected to generate interest among artists across Australia.

First established in 2015 as the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize and including three prize categories, the name change this year is just one of the ways the prize has evolved.

The Major Prize has increased to $25,000 from $15,000, and is no longer acquisitive, making it one of the most generous non-acquisitive painting prizes in the country.

The Local Art Prize component has been renamed the Beckett Local Prize, in honour of remarkable local modernist Clarice Beckett. Beckett’s lyrical depictions of Bayside’s suburb Beaumaris, where she lived for many years, are now considered synonymous with the area. Unappreciated for her art during her lifetime, Beckett is now widely recognised as one of Australia’s most important modern landscape painters. This acquisitive Local Prize has increased to $10,000 from $3,000.

The third component is the $1,000 People’s Choice Prize, which remains unchanged and is determined by the visitors at the close of the exhibition.

Call for entries closes 23 February 2024. Apply now
