What makes a story popular – why it’s clicked on, read and shared – is an inexact science.

Sometimes it’s a good news story; sometimes it’s a story which has shocked or outraged the sector. A story might be popular because it promises an opportunity for artists – a new grant or residency you can apply for – or because it’s a review of a major new production that the whole country is curious about.

Richard Watts is ArtsHub's National Performing Arts Editor; he also presents the weekly program SmartArts on Three Triple R FM, and serves as the Chair of La Mama Theatre's volunteer Committee of Management. Richard is a life member of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, and was awarded the status of Melbourne Fringe Living Legend in 2017. In 2020 he was awarded the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards' Facilitator's Prize.
