Prominent art historian, Bernard Smith, dies

One of the founders of art history in Australia, and friend to some of Australia’s most renowned artists, passed away on Friday, at the age of 94.

The art world and the academic world will be mourning side by side this week with the passing of one of the founders of the study of art history in Australia, Bernard Smith.

Smith passed away in Melbourne on Friday. He was 94.

Smith dedicated his life to developing Australians’ interest and knowledge of artistic traditions and was arguably one of the most highly regarded art historians Australia has seen.
