The Paint the Sky project has been developed over a number of years engaging remote artists from the Katherine region to paint their traditional art onto large scale kites that were presented as a flying exhibition by the artists and Mike Alvares at the opening of the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre in July 2012.

The project commenced with the Bulman community back in 2004, where three traditional Indigenous artists Kevin Forbes, Joanne Forbes and Shane Bowden worked with professional kite maker Mike Alvares to paint their art onto large kites. In 2010 at Bulman’s inaugural community festival, the kites were flown in memory of Joanne Forbes, who had passed away. The following year Richard Forbes added his kite to the Bulman collection and worked with Mike Alvares to fly the kites.
