Festival of reading ready to roar

Festivals are for readers as well as writers. A new festival kicking off in Hobart next week turns the traditional literary festival upside down.

Hobart’s Weekend of Reading focuses on the reader rather than the writer, but that doesn’t mean that plenty of writers won’t be present.

‘The purpose of the festival is to celebrate and promote the importance and benefits of reading and literacy,’ said festival co-director Kate Harrison. ‘We want to create an accessible space for reading, learning and sharing as well as acknowledging that close to half the population of Tasmania is not functionally literate.’
