While recent research has found budget cuts to Australia Council could impede Australian arts from flourishing abroad, a new partnership will ensure a diversity of local work gets seen can be seen on the world stage in New York City.
The Australia Council for the Arts has signed a three-year partnership with Performance Space 122 (PS122) to guarantee presentation of local work in its program, with three Australian works to feature in its upcoming COIL 2016 Festival in January.
After years of negotiating, the $60,000 a year initiative was under threat due to the funding changes, but fortunately signed just in time.
The 2016 Australian line up includes Morphia Series by Helen Herbertson and Ben Cobham; Intimacy by Ranters Theater; and Brisbane Polytoxic’s karaoke experience, BackUp Service.
PS122 already has a strong Australian connection. Artistic director Vallejo Gantner is the great-grandson of Sidney Myer, and son of cultural leader and philanthropist Carrillo Gantner.
Despite his ties to Australia’s most prominent cultural figures, Gantner remains loyal to the independent sector and has a passion for distinct work being shown internationally.
