As award season takes off for 2018, ArtsHub posed a question to the winners of the Victorian Premier Literary Awards: do prizes cultivate a sense of community or engender competition among peers?

Women and non-binary writers are currently finding massive success in the literary prize circuit. All seven prize categories at the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards (VPLA) were awarded to women; in addition, the special category of People’s Choice was awarded to a non-binary writer.
